Phoenix Wedding Photographer :: Keri + Christian

Keri was referred to me by the Mother of the Bride from my very first solo wedding. I can't tell you what an honor that is to get a referral off of my first wedding. Thank you Sandra.

I met Keri and Christian for the first time at a coffee shop in Tempe and I instantly knew they were going to be fun to spend a wedding day with. They didn't disappoint at all. They were both so happy all day long and who could blame them. The weather was perfect and their family and friends were so much fun. They danced more than any group of guests I've seen in a long time.

Fun Details

Keri's Grandmother's locket was attached to her bouquet.

Keri disappeared for a while and came back and surprised Christian with a choreographed belly dance routine complete with drums and supporting dancers. It was super sweet. Then she darted off and put her wedding dress back on just like a pro.

Brittney and I met at DC Ranch Market Street in Scottsdale, Arizona for a fun "anytime" session to celebrate her upcoming 21st birthday. I took some belated grad pix of Brittney a couple of years ago and she wanted something a little more grown up looking. Umm... I think we nailed it. Great job Brit. It was a lot of fun. Phoenix Photographer :: Photog Shootout

I am always reading blogs or tutorials trying to improve my art and when a seminar comes along that is a little out of the norm, I really get excited to participate. Christy and Jasen from Studio Moirae and Andy Andrews from Muse Photography teamed up with Rob Nicholson from Humbled Eyes Photography in Delaware and hosted Rob's Photog Shootout Seminar. We walked around the downtown Phoenix neighborhood near Studio Moirae and practiced techniques in composition, posing and use of flash. Its great to get to meet new photographers in the area and spend time with others I've known for a while.

Here are some of my favorite images from my day. Thanks to Jennifer and Lauren for their great model work.

Here is a sneak peak for new parents, Kim and Jordan. It was a blast spending time in their home and seeing how excited they are about the arrival of their baby girl. The nursery is almost ready and the glider rocker has been warmed up. We included their first baby, Soda who was pretty nervous at first but quickly became a serious diva.

Congratulations Kim and Jordan. As a parent of three, I can assure you that this new chapter of your lives will be absolutely wonderful. Thanks for inviting me in and allowing me to capture this moment that can never be repeated.

A Long Overdue Post

January was such a crazy month that I didn't take the time to post all of my holiday sessions. This was my first year really going after family portraits specifically for holiday cards and gifts. It was a blast. Although most people get pretty stressed during the holiday time all of my subjects were full of holiday spirit along with myself and we all had great fun together.

The {P} Family was my first session of the holidays. Mindy was a great friend in high school. We even went to senior prom together. Well not together-together. She had her date and I had mine. Anyway, it was awesome to meet her wonderful husband and adorable little girl. We held our session at The Secret Garden where her and Ken were married 5 years earlier.

Jenny and her cute little guy met me at Saguaro Ranch Park for a fun session at the farm yard. We captured this beautiful image in the cornfield on a gorgeous fall evening.

Our first official family photos of the new {H} Family. Also at SRP, we found out that pre-holiday time is a very busy time for family photos at the park. We had to wait our turn to get popular backgrounds. It was worth it.

The {H} Family have taken their holiday pix at their home for years now and this is the first time we took advantage of their beautiful view of the McDowell Mountains. We used off-camera strobe to add an almost studio quality to the image.

Miss {B} was an amazing subject. I kept telling her dad what natural posing talent she has.

Another subject I shoot often. My lovely niece's and with Mom and Dad this time.

Here is the {S} family. We shot at their home in Cave Creek on a stormy night. We had to run out between rain showers and deal with the wind but in the end we had some really nice sunlight to work with. And what about those dogs. I've never worked with dogs that posed so well.

The {P} Family was all together in early December and wanted a group shot that they haven't had in a long time.

Again, little {B} with Mommy and Daddy. I love how happy she looks getting her family squeeze on.

Check out the {D} Fam. Mom did a great job of coordinating their colors. It worked beautifully with our surroundings at the Cibola Vista Resort and Spa.

Scottsdale Wedding Photography | Jake+Allison

I felt right at home with all of the tattoos, gauged ears, and skeletons. Jake and Allison are a rockin' couple who show their love for edgy fashion and decor as much as they show their passion for each other. They spent the whole night together, side by side as their guests enjoyed a beautiful November evening at Allison's parents house.

I often come away from a wedding feeling like I just spent the day with some great people but this one was different. Jake and Allison treated Jessi and I like good friends who were just there to celebrate their perfect day. The fact that they had The Cornish Pasty Company cater and Four Peaks beer made me love 'em even more.

Their wedding theme focused on El Día de los Muertos {Day of the Dead} which was the following day.

Allison looked magnificent thanks to the makeup talent of mine and Jessi's friend, Bryana Nichols. I'm sure you are wondering why Jessi didn't do the makeup. It's rare that Jessi has a Saturday to spend with me and Bryana offered her talents.

When I first met Jake and Allison, we checked out her parents house where the wedding was going to take place. When I saw this red couch, I knew we HAD to get a picture on it.

While have a fun first dance mixed with sweet embraces and lively twirls, Jake decided to freak EVERYONE out by picking up Allison and pretending to jump into the pool. He was very convincing.

Then they had some fun with the cake.

And finally some passion. Allison, you nailed it!!

Destination Wedding Photography | Lance+Rachel

Her skin is flawless and she has one of the prettiest smiles I have ever seen. Considering Rachel's best friend's dad since toddler years was a dentist it comes at no surprise. And Lance, well he seems to have been chiseled from the same blocks of marble that Michelangelo worked from. It's almost as if God asked for advice from Tyra when pairing these two. Fierce! Did I just type that?!?!

When Lance took me to lunch that day last december and asked me under a vow of silence to be their wedding photographer, I was honored. I was intimidated. I was excited beyond belief. This would be my first destination wedding assignment. I also had to keep it quiet since they were not telling anyone about it for several months. Oh the agony.

Ok, so my statements about how beautiful this couple is may seem strong and possibly embarrassing to Lance and Rachel, but take a look at these photos captured at the Riu Palace Mexico in Playa Del Carmen, then correct me if I'm wrong.

The day started out on the golf course with Lance, his Dad, and his brother-in-laws.

Check out Rachel's gorgeous dress and colorful bouquet.

The weather was hot and very humid. It was uncomfortable but no one was concerned with it. It was all about Lance and Rachel and a hurricane couldn't have held back the love everyone was feeling for this couple.

You've got to love the casual setting of a beach wedding.

Lance gave Rachel a beautiful engagement ring but to everyones surprise (especially Rachel's) it was a fake. Glass and silver. During the ring exchange, he didn't even have the real ring on her finger and she spotted the difference. The surprise and confusion on her face was priceless. She couldn't take her eyes off of it. You gotta love the look on Lance's Dad's face in the background. Yeah, he was one of the few that were in on it.

Did I mention she couldn't take her eyes off of the ring?

Now the the real eye candy.

The shot on the right is my absolute favorite of the day.

The following day we went for a "Rock the Dress" session. The people on the beach and near the pool were not quite sure of what they were witnessing. We had a blast!!

These shots may not seem unusual but we had to crawl through a window 4 feet off the ground to get into this atrium.

Peoria Arizona Wedding Photography | Donna+Randy

Donna contacted me through email and asked me if I could capture their backyard wedding. She told me that it was going to be pretty small and their attendants would include their seven adult children and two beloved English Bulldogs. I thought this sounded like a great time. When I got to their house I noticed Randy's motorcycle decor and he didn't waste anytime showing my his bike collection in the garage. What a great family. I felt very welcome the minute I got there and Donna even seemed disappointed when I told her I couldn't stick around for the rest of the evening.

Mesa Arizona Wedding Photography | Nichelle+Saye

Nichelle and Saye were married this past Sunday during Labor Day weekend. It was a typical early September day in the Arizona Valley of the Sun with temps over 100 degrees and a bit muggy from the previous days rain storms. The clouds weren't even courteous enough to stick around for one more day. I met the guys in Old Town Gilbert for a quick session. I had not met Saye prior to the wedding day and didn't know what to expect. Saye was so cool and so were his groomsman, we had a great time together. He was very happy to be getting married, he danced up and down the aisle and smiled all day long.

The ladies were a little behind so we shot some quick shots in the venue's courtyard before the ceremony. Nichelle seemed a bit nervous but that could have just been her quiet demeanor. Her mom and sister surprised her with a cool choreographed dance routine set to a pre-recorded audio track. It was pretty entertaining.

I hope you enjoy the pix. I experimented with some actions from Kubota and TRA, some are heavier than others.

This is the shot where I jacked up my knee. I haven't had x-rays yet but it feels like a torn MCL. My wife thinks this is a cool shot so I'll write off the injury as a successful battle scar.

Ah shade!! Thanks to Joe's BBQ in Gilbert for such a beautiful setting. The guys just looked natural in here with their brown and ivory tones agains the soft background. They crushed it! Even little Lonnel is posing it up.

The Pastor's Boy with a Rockin' Name

I only have two first-cousins on my Dad's side of the family and they are the son's of my Dad's younger sister. There is quite an age difference between us and they grew up over a thousand miles away from me. Thankfully, my Dad was an Interstate Commodities Transportation Engineer. That was his spin on the occupation of a truck driver. His career path allowed me to make frequent visits to my Aunt's house in Washington a few times each summer when I was a teenager. Those visits allowed my cousins and I a chance to know each other better. Today they are successful adults and we cherish every chance we get to spend time together laughing and loving.

Ryan, the older of the two brothers became a Lutheran Minister and received his initial pastoral assignment here in Phoenix a few years ago. He and his wife just had their first little niblet and he has become the talk of the family. Ryan told us a few months ago that he was going to be named Sebastian Axel. Sebastian Axel!!! It doesn't get any more 80's rock than that!! I mean Sebastian Bach from Skid Row and Axel Rose from Gun's and Roses, the were icons of the era. I was quickly informed that the two names are from Lutheran biblical history. Ah well, he is still a little rock star in our eyes.

This is Sebastian. I think the socks are a bit distracting but if you check out the next image, you'll quickly realize that he really likes having his socks on.

Sebastian still wasn't happy when we tried this shot. I wanted a peaceful shot of him resting his head on the bible. Ryan even opened the bible to a passage with special meaning regarding children. I thought it was still a beautiful shot with a new daddy trying to comfort his little boy.

Three generations and the new little family.

Ok, so the picture on the left has some real special meaning. The chair that Ryan is in was purchased by our great-grandparents when they were pregnant with their first child. Our grandmother was rocked in that chair, my father, Ryan's mother and the baby of the family, our Aunt Susan were rocked in that chair. I was even rocked in that chair. Susan has had the chair since our grandparents passed away and made arrangements for Ryan and Adi to use it for their children. Its so amazing to see this single piece of furniture have so much meaning to us family members.

The picture on the right says so much about my Uncle Leo. He has so much pride in his family and spending time with just one or many means the world to him. The look on his face in this picture is what you will see every time Leo is around his loved ones. He is a great man and hope to be the husband and father he is.

I recently did this shoot for a friend/colleague of mine. She is a fantastic graphic designer with an amazing talent for wrapping her head around the big picture of marketing. I have been in the graphic design business for 20 years and she has been in it for about 6 or so. I am quick to turn to her for advice. She is THAT good. The only advantage I have on this young woman is a vast knowledge of MAC keyboard shortcuts. LOL

Our Baby Becomes a Teenager

The other day our youngest son, Kaeden turned 13. I would have never thought that I would be emotionally affected by this. But the thought of the innocent questions and silly little giggles of our children being gone forever is a sad realization. Its hard to accept the idea now but maybe in a few more years the idea of being a grandparent will start to sound exciting.

Kaeden decided to invite a couple friends over to the house for a little pool party. The weather was a scorcher on that Wednesday afternoon so the pool was one of the only options. After some swimming then cake and ice cream we took a little break and then took all the kids to the opening day of the new Harry Potter movie. They all had fun and Kaeden was very thankful for his fun day and so were Jessi and I.

Gilbert Engagement Photography | Rachel Says Yes!!

This is Lance & Rachel. They have been great friends of mine for about 6 years and they have been together for 3 years prior to that. Needless to say the last few years have been filled with pressure on Lance from friends, family and maybe even Rachel to pop the darn question! Well it finally happened last month and Lance pulled it off in quiet romantic style that focused their relationship. He even proposed at the break of dawn which completely caught Rachel off guard. Lance and Rachel are a beautiful couple on the outside as well as on the inside. I am honored to have been able to take these engagement pictures but more so am honored to be their friend. I hope you enjoy these images that we took last week in old town Gilbert, AZ.

Lance might hate me for the one on the right but Rachel was giving him a nose kiss and his reaction was awesome.

This was going to be a silhouette but once I saw how passionate the kiss was, I couldn't help but share it. I have no shame...

This is Isabella. She is our best friends sweet little girl and was born with double cleft pallet. From the day we saw daddy hand feeding her with a special tube apparatus in the hospital the day she was born, we knew she was going to have our hearts forever. They were over the other day for some swimming and Auntie Jessi gave her a new puppy. We love you {M} family.

What a fun Saturday!! I met Aaron (or Justin as he likes to be called) at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Phoenix and captured some images of he and his family before the ceremony. Justin surprised Pam by wearing his military dress uniform which made for a beautiful looking couple. I hope you dig the pix.

Pams bouquet was made by her friend and check out that rock! Beautiful ring set.

They had the best mariachi group I have ever heard. They were all female and had the most beautiful voices. I can't wait to hear them again. Oh... and what about the little sweetie with the flowers.

This shot really captures the spirit of the day. They had so much fun and Pam's mom was really enjoying herself with all of their family. Most of them were from out of town.

1st Annual NABI Pow wow

This past weekend a good friend of mine came to town to compete in the first annual Native American Basketball Invitational Pow wow. Rusty and I started working together 13 years ago in Bismarck, ND and I've always admired him for the effort he puts into being the best man he can. He has been an accomplished basketball player, a nationally acclaimed Pow wow Grass Dancer, a successful self-employed businessman and a very proud husband and father. I am honored to know Rusty and call him my friend. I was also honored to walk beside him in his competition arena on Sunday, especially since he took 1st place in the senior men's grass dance category.

These first two pictures are of Rusty in action.

The rest of the pictures are people that stood out to me for various reasons. I hope you find them as intriguing as I do.

Kostas is from Greece and was amazed how Northern Arizona reminded him of the outskirts of Athens. I still want to see for myself. It was an early Sunday morning when I pulled into this families driveway. I knew that mom had been recently diagnosed with cancer but I didn't know what kind. Later, I found out it was breast cancer and she was going to have a double mastectomy later in the week. When I was greeted by Mrs. L I was blown away by how vibrant she was and completely excited for this photo session. Later I found out that it had been 12 years since they had a family portrait. People... that is just too long!! This family was so much fun and are in my prayers for a complete recovery.

I was called by a friends mom while in Minnesota on an early family Christmas vacation asking if I could shoot a wedding for a visiting family member two weeks later. I had the day available and was really excited about the opportunity. It was held at the Cimmaron Hills Clubhouse in McDowell Mountain Ranch overlooking the North Valley of Scottsdale and Phoenix. Jenn was 6 months pregnant and look absolutely adorable in her beautiful dress. I really enjoyed spending the day with this family and look forward to sharing the images with them.

The Greatest Christmas Ever!

Hi Everyone,

We just returned from a great trip back to Minnesota and North Dakota for an early Christmas with Jessi's side of the family. Notice I didn't say Jessi's family. After over 15 years as an "In-Law", I consider them as much my family as anyone's. Our boys haven't spend any time in the snow since we moved to Arizona 8 years ago. You can tell by this first picture that Kaeden was taking it all in on our first morning when we awoke to a picturesque snowfall.

We were fortunate enough to be able to find this beautiful log cabin-themed restaurant that let us set up a family photo. I employed the bartender to hold the flash for us while we snapped five quick pictures. You can see how little Braiden is looking that direction. He must have thought the bartender was taking the picture because he is looking at him in EVERY picture. I thought that was very funny.
My wonderful parents (in-laws) live on a beautiful lake in western Minnesota and the lake froze over very smooth this year. We were fortunate to get out there and pull the kids around on a sled with the ATV one day. Even Grandma loves to get out there and enjoy the excitement.

This image shows a crack in the ice and you can see that its at least 10 inches thick. I have never been on a frozen lake like that before and I'll tell you that it is a nervous feeling when you feel the ice crack and hear the sound radiate through the lake.

This image shows Jordan and Kaeden trying to look through the ice into the lake. They couldn't really see anything but the real point of sharing this image is comparing it to the image after it. Not only did we get to experience a winter that we have been away from for 8 years but we experienced the third largest snowfall in a 24 hour period on record. You can see how much snow is on the lake when we woke up after the storm. I can tell you that it was simply beautiful.

The following pictures are from our trip to a Christmas tree farm. This was the day before the storm hit. It was very cold but we still had a great time. We were blessed with the most beautiful frost on the trees, a photographers dream.

Finally, I provide you with my two favorite pictures from the trip. This first one is of my nephews after opening a gift that they had no idea of what it was about. They tore open the wrapping paper with feverish excitement and then stood back and looked at it with... well, these expressions. It was priceless. I seriously giggle out loud every time I look at the picture.

This shot was of Dane after he came in from an extended below zero degree snow session. He had frozen eyelashes and I just wanted to capture it and was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful light coming through the frost covered door window.

I had a fun session on Friday evening with B. She wanted to get some shots that captured her playful personality and we nailed it. I revisited this killer waterfall on the corner of a very busy intersection in Peoria but the beauty is that its below street level so you avoid the "rubba-neckas". Jessi and I are proud of how tender-hearted our boys are. They truly care about people and have extra special places in their hearts for animals of all kinds. This can have negative effects. For the third time this year, yeah I said third, the boys have brought home a new kitten. It was very easy for me to say "absolutely not" the first two times. This one is a little more difficult. Check this one out.

When will we learn that there is such a thing as TOO MANY pets.

I had my first solo wedding shoot a couple of weeks ago. I was a little nervous but not as much as I expected. We were freaked out when the sprinklers came on in the park shortly after we started shooting. After playing a little "Frogger" trying to dodge the sprinkers we got out of there without a wet bride. I even had to use my brand new reflector as a shield. We returned after the ceremony and got some spectacular shots.

They were married on an island so I had to go with a marine themed ring shot. The rings are sitting on one of the dock timbers.

My Second Wedding

Thanks to "Capture This!" by Brooke, I was able to shoot second once again to try to overcome my fear of being the sole photographer and potentially ruining someones wedding memories. I do love to shoot weddings. I just love being surrounded by all of the excitement and happiness. As a photographer it is a very great atmosphere to be in. Nathan and Amanda were really nice people and they and their families really had a fun day. The wedding was held on the rooftop of the hotel and was nearly rained out. Fortunately it passed and we only had to deal with a little wind.

I've wanted to start a blog through Blogger for some time now. So here I go. This should be fun. Lets start with an introduction.

This is me.

I grew up between North Dakota and Arizona. I received my degree in Commercial Art in 1989 and have been working as a production designer all these years. Yeah... I'm getting old. I'm an Apple freak! Macintosh, iPods, iPhone you name it, I love it. My family and I have been back in Arizona since 2001.

Speaking of family, this is my beautiful wife. We been with each other for nearly 20 years.

We have three great boys.

The High School Graduate/Rocker.
